Will AI Engines Replace Google and Other Traditional Search Engines?

As AI engines become more commonplace in the average internet user’s everyday toolkit, the question on everybody’s lips is: will AI engines replace traditional search?

The short answer is no. Instead we’re more likely to see an integrative, hybrid application of both.

Different use cases

We use traditional Google Search and AI engines for different reasons. In AI engines, questions tend to be longer and more specific; conversational in tone and low risk in nature. AI engines are prone to hallucination (disinformation), which teamed with a lack of accurate citation makes it difficult to verify the truth of its results.

But for low stakes everyday queries - from recipe suggestions to product recommendations - AI engines offer valuable insights, prompting multipart, ongoing and conversational information discovery.

When looking for specific websites or trustworthy data, users will likely still default to using traditional search engines. AI responses in nature are long and wordy, which for certain queries is overkill, and can be better served by a simple Google search.

A hybrid future

Google is already integrating AI overviews into search results, with an optional switch to AI Mode when searching. A traditional search engine complemented by AI.

We will likely continue to see people using traditional search to verify AI engine results, as well as local business discovery, navigational purposes and fact-checked first party information.

There are also a number of people who choose not to use generative AI, citing environmental, ethical, trustworthiness, copyright and safeguarding concerns. These people will continue to use traditional search and directly visit your website.

In summary

Traditional search isn’t going anywhere, at least any time soon. We are seeing traffic from AI engines increasing, but certainly not overtaking traditional Google search. The smart way forward is to ensure your website is primed to serve in both traditional search and AI engine queries, both of which draw on the same core SEO principles.
