The problem
For most D2C ecommerce businesses, shipping rules are straightforward: charge a standard rate below a certain spend, offer free shipping above that. This is easily implemented in a store’s Shopify settings.
But for merchants that sell bulky, irregular or direct from manufacturer items, shipping isn’t so simple. These vendors require third-party shipping rate apps and spotless product data in order to charge accurate shipping costs to their customers.

What we implemented
How do you build a shipping rate, communicate it to a customer, and integrate it with Google Merchant Center, on a product by product basis - without massive administrative and technical overhead?
The answer: a shipping label + Parcelify.
We start by mapping every shipping rate configuration with the client, including exceptions and edge cases. Once each distinct rate is agreed, a label is assigned to group relevant products, using the Google Shopping shipping label metafield. Each rate is then built and stress-tested in Parcelify, before configuring for Google Shopping. This approach delivers four things:
- Parcelify compatibility. Parcelify reads each shipping label, either from the raw metafield or from a collection built on it, and charges the correct amount at checkout.
- Google Merchant Center compatibility. Accurate delivery policies are required for products to appear in free and paid listings. Using the same data point in Shopify and Google Merchant Center also removes duplicated work.
- Tightly defined labels. We lock the metafield definition to a single choice from a list. This reduces errors when product data is entered and prevents rates stacking in Parcelify by accident.
- Delivery terms on the product page. The data point that drives shipping rates also surfaces delivery terms on the product page, set by a metaobject. That means less admin and fewer inconsistencies.
