Shopify and OpenAI are bringing shopping into ChatGPT, making it possible to buy without ever leaving the conversation.

Through a new partnership with OpenAI, Shopify is bringing shopping into everyday AI conversations. This step builds on the vision of Shopify’s founder, Tobi Lütke, who imagined a future where merchants could sell wherever those conversations happen.

AI already plays a big role in daily decisions. What begins with a simple question, such as planning a dinner party or searching for the perfect gift, often leads to buying something. With this integration, those purchases can happen right inside ChatGPT. Shoppers will soon be able to order from millions of merchants, including Glossier, Spanx, Vuori, Away, Stanley 1913 and Steve Madden, without ever leaving their chat.

"Shopping is changing fast. People are discovering products in AI conversations, not just through search or ads," says Vanessa Lee, VP of Product at Shopify. "This will let our merchants show up naturally in those moments and give shoppers a way to buy without breaking their flow. It's a really exciting shift for commerce."

Millions of products, ready to be discovered

Behind the scenes, Shopify is powering discovery with live data covering pricing, inventory, images and product options. This means hundreds of millions of items can now appear in ChatGPT searches in a way the AI can understand and present for immediate purchase.

“AI will fundamentally reshape how our customers shop. Being on Shopify means we can automatically be wherever our customers are shopping, including inside AI conversations,” says Colleen Waters, VP of eCommerce at Steve Madden. “That lets us stay focused on our brand and customers while staying at the forefront of commerce.”

For merchants, the setup is designed to be simple and transparent. Store names are shown clearly so shoppers always know who they are buying from. Orders arrive directly in the Shopify admin with accurate attribution and clear fees. Merchants stay the seller of record, keep ownership of the shopper relationship and choose whether checkout happens instantly or through their online store.

"Our goal is always to keep merchants on the cutting edge by default," says Vanessa. "As we expand, merchants will unlock new ways to sell automatically, with their brand and shopper relationships still front and center. We're focused on building tools that help merchants grow, no matter their size or experience."

A new chapter for commerce and AI

The shift towards AI-driven shopping is accelerating, and this partnership ensures Shopify merchants are part of that change. It is an example of agentic commerce in practice: transactions taking place directly inside conversations, without replacing the channels that already work for merchants.

The benefit is clear. Entrepreneurs can focus more on building their products, serving their shoppers and growing their businesses, instead of figuring out new channels. While others are still debating the possibilities of AI, Shopify merchants will already be making sales through ChatGPT, with Shopify managing the technical side.

"We're making sure our merchants thrive in the era of agentic commerce," says Vanessa. "We're helping everyone from indie brands to household names reach shoppers in entirely new ways.”

Because the future of commerce is not about waiting to react. It is about being ready from the very start.
